Four levels of paint protection, same panel. Switch between bare paint, wax, sealant, and a ceramic coating and watch the water behaviour change, alongside gloss, chemical resistance, how hard the car is to wash, and how long each one actually lasts.
A real coating cross-links to the clear coat. Water sheets off, brake dust rinses instead of sticking, and washing gets noticeably faster.
Compare the 2, 5, and 9 year systems side by side on durability, gloss, chemical resistance, and cost per year of protection instead of sticker price.
The water pattern in the tool is not decoration. Contact angle — how tightly water beads on a surface — is the standard measure of how hydrophobic a finish is, and it maps directly onto the things you care about. Tight beads mean water carries dirt off the panel as it rolls, brake dust rinses instead of bonding, and the car dries without water spots. Flat sheeting water means the panel is holding contamination against the clear coat, which is where etching starts.
Bare paint sheets. Wax beads loosely for a few weeks. A sealant holds a decent bead for months. A real coating beads tightly for years, and that difference is the entire practical argument for coating over wax.
Wax is a natural or synthetic layer that sits on top of the clear coat. It adds warmth and a bit of gloss and washes off in roughly six to eight weeks, faster with hot water or degreaser. Nothing wrong with it — it is just temporary by design.
Sealant is a synthetic polymer that bonds more strongly and lasts four to six months. Better chemical resistance than wax, easier application, and a common step for owners who like maintaining their own cars.
Ceramic coating is a silica-based liquid that cross-links into a hard, semi-permanent layer chemically bonded to the clear coat. It measurably resists acids, alkalis, UV, and mineral deposits, holds a tight bead for years, and cuts wash time roughly in half because dirt has much less to grab. What it doesnot do is stop physical impact — a rock chip goes straight through a coating, which is whatpaint protection film is for.
A coating locks in whatever is underneath it, permanently, for years. That is why every coating we install starts with a wash, iron and tar decontamination, a clay treatment, and at least a single-stage machine polish. If you coat over swirls, you have preserved the swirls. Most of the labour in a coating job, and most of the visible gloss improvement, comes from the correction stage — not the coating itself.
This is also the honest reason coating prices vary so much. A two-year coating on a well-kept sedan is $699. A nine-year system on a neglected black truck needing multi-stage correction is a different job entirely.
A coating is not a no-wash finish. Wash it every two to three weeks with a pH-neutral soap and two buckets, skip automatic brush washes entirely, and dry it with a blower or a clean towel. Bring it back once a year and we inspect the coating, top it if it needs it, and keep the warranty active. Owners who do that get the full durability rating; owners who run it through a brush wash every week do not, and no warranty covers that. Full package pricing is on the ceramic coating page.
Coating questions
No. A coating is measured in microns and is chemical protection, not armour. It stops water spots, bug etching, bird droppings, and UV fade, and it makes contamination release instead of bonding. If you want chip protection you want paint protection film.
A single-stage correction is included with every coating, because a coating locks in whatever is under it. Heavier defects, single-stage paint, and anything needing wet sanding are quoted after we inspect the car under proper lighting.
The durability figure is honest for a maintained car: two years on the entry system, five on Signature, nine on Elite. Maintained means hand washing with a pH-neutral soap and not running it through a brush wash. Neglected, any coating dies early.
Yes — a coating makes washing faster and safer, not optional. Dirt releases with far less pressure, which means fewer swirls, and water sheets off instead of spotting. Plan on a hand wash every two to three weeks.
All three. Wheel faces are best done off the car so the barrels get coated too, which is why brake dust stops sticking. Glass coating makes rain bead and roll off above about 40 mph. Fabric and leather coatings resist spills and UV cracking.
The coating flashes in the bay and is handling-safe when you pick it up, but it keeps cross-linking for about a week. Keep it out of rain for 24 hours and off automatic washes for a week. We hand you written care instructions at pickup.
Per year of protection, the longer systems cost less — that is the whole point of the comparison tool. Whether it is worth it depends on how long you are keeping the car. If you lease for three years, the entry or Signature system is the sensible spend.
Yes, and we usually do. It makes the film easier to clean, adds UV protection to the urethane, and means the whole car behaves the same way when you wash it.
